Water Purification

A purification process eliminates undesired contaminants and mitigates risks that can lead to potential health hazards.

Water gets contaminated with impurities ranging from organic compounds, minerals and gases that change the physical characteristics of water (temperature, turbidity, electrical conductivity, color), chemical (pH, chemical and biological demand of oxygen, total organic carbon, alkalinity) and biological quality of water.

The principal objective of water purification is to produce water that meets water quality standards for intended use. It requires elimination of undesirable constituents from raw water and produce treated water of required quality.

Membrane Treatment

A mobile membrane filtration system is a decentralised form of water provision which requires limited infrastructure for water provision. It short-circuits the water supply value chain process and presents a more flexible and affordable form of water provision. Using this process, water can be treated from the nearest water source and be transported through water tankers to consumers.

Membrane technology is the most robust and flexible technology for water purification. As Greware, we have adopted this technology as it has a high rate of separation, no regeneration of media, lower energy consumption and operates in continuous mode.

There are two types of membrane separation processes: pressure driven and non pressure driven membranes. The pressure driven processes include: microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO).

Disinfection

Disinfection is the primary mechanism for the inactivation/destruction of pathogenic organisms to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases to water users and the environment. It is important that water be adequately treated prior to disinfection for it to be effective.

Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system transfers electromagnetic energy from a mercury arc lamp to an organism’s genetic material (DNA and RNA). When UV radiation penetrates the cell wall of an organism, it destroys the cell’s ability to reproduce.

The effectiveness of a UV disinfection system depends on the characteristics of the water treated, the intensity of time, micro-organisms exposed to radiation, and the reactor configurator.

The advantages of disinfecting with UV are:

• Effective at inactivating most viruses, spores and cysts

• It is a physical process rather than a chemical disinfectant.

• It eliminates handling, transportation and storage of  hazardous chemicals

• There is no residual effect that can be harmful to life

• It is user-friendly for operation

• It has a shorter contact time when compared with other disinfectants

• UV disinfection equipment requires less space than other methods

UV disinfection is one consideration for mobile potable water supply. However, the use of disinfection tablets is another consideration as an addition for disinfection residual during transportation and consumption.
